Dear Parent/Guardians:

An exciting new school year has begun. Because the health of our children is very important to all of us, I want to share some information about the H1N1 (swine flu) and the preparations Ellensburg School District is undertaking to protect students and staff. Our goal is to minimize the impact this flu will have on the educational process and extra-curricular school activities.

You have probably heard about the H1N1 (swine flu) virus that first appeared in April of this year.   The Washington State Public Health Dept and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are predicting an increase in influenza activity this fall. Our school district is monitoring the situation continually and staying current with recommendations from federal, state, and local public health officials. .

One of the most important things you can do to stop the spread of germs is keep children at home if they are sick. Children should stay home at least 24 hours after their fever (100 degrees or over) has passed without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Signs/symptoms of the flu include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache. In addition, tiredness, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can occur.

Things You Can Do To Prevent the Flu

Wash your hands: wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Cover your cough: cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you do not have a tissue available, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
Talk with your health care provider: whether you and family membersshould receive seasonal flu vaccine or the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
Make a plan – plan ahead for childcare at home if your child gets sick or if school has to be dismissed.

Sincerely,

Paul Farris, Superintendent
